Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ —
The Third and Sixth Hour are normally read in this manner before the Divine Liturgy from the Sunday of St. Thomas until the beginning of the Great Fast, as well as on the Saturdays and Sundays of the Great Fast.
On the eve of the feasts of the Nativity and the Theophany (or the previous Friday) they are replaced by the Royal Hours.
During the weekdays of the Great Fast the order for reading the hours follows a special, Lenten order.
The Hours may also be read alone, apart from the Liturgy, on any day of the year. In this case they would be read at 9 AM (3rd hour) and 12 noon (6th hour). If a priest is not present the person reading simply replaces the priest’s blessing and exclamations (“Blessed is our God…”, “For Thine is the Kingdom…”, “Through the prayer…”) with “Through the prayers of our Holy Fathers, Lord Jesus Christ, Son of God, have mercy on us!”, and other than this the service is read in the same manner as usual.
