O holy couple, elect of the Lord! O eminent union blessed of God! O longed for couple, beloved of Christ! Who doth not marvel, hearing of their deeds which transcend man? How did the female sex stand in manly manner against the arrogant tyrant And strengthen her husband, that he not give in to the wicked, But choose to die for the faith rather than to live?
Vesperal Hymns and Tones have also been combined into one .pdf file. While these notes are very much a work in process, they are a useful introduction to the Kyivan and Obikhod melodies used at Vespers, the first service of the liturgical day.
Added to Vespers:
Прийдіть, поклонімось [O come, let us worship] (UA only)
Псалом 103 (Psalm 103) [UA only]
Блажен Муж (UA) • Blessed is the Man (EN)
Світе Тихий (UA) • O Gladsome Light (EN)
Вечірній Прокимен (UA) • Vespers Prokeimen (EN)
Пісня праведного Симеона (UA) • Song of St. Simeon (EN)
Вечірні голоси 1-5 (UA) • Vesperal Tones 1-5
In the coming weeks, pastyr.ca will be introducing a format we hope will be especially welcome in our parishes — combining musical notation, transliteration, English in-line translation and rubrics, to help engage those used to focusing on reading music during our services more fully in worship. In this digital age, this is still, surprisingly, largely a manual process — but the results are well worth the time and effort.
Keep watching this page for updates — or “like” us on facebook to receive news of the postings as soon as they happen.
We look forward to seeing many of you at the Eastern Eparchy’s Cantoring Skills Workshop: this Saturday, September 7, St. Demetrius’ church on 3338 Lakeshore Blvd. West — 1pm sharp!
Pray for us.
Christ, our Pascha, from the Euchologion of Metr. St. Petro Mohyla Добрий Пастир молитовник ∞ The Good Shepherd prayer book. Winnipeg: Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada (UOCC), 2013
…Тобі слава подобає, Отцю, і Сину, і Святому Духові, нині, і повсякчас, і на віки віків. Амінь.
Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Music preparation is ongoing, with a view to reconciling, as much as is possible, the Kyivan or Obikhod melodies with the text of the Добрий Пастир ∞ The Good Shepherd UOCC prayer book — and adding elements for accessibility and comprehension like transliteration and translation.
While these materials are being reviewed and final formats agreed upon, please find provisional music notes for Vespers and from the Funeral Rite of a Layman on the newly activated Music page. These will be replaced with updated files to reflect ongoing changes and improvements — update information will be posted on this site and on pastyr.ca’s facebook page:
Дорогі у Христі Ісусі браття і сестри — Слава Ісусу Христу! Слава на віки Богу.
Links to Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada parishes with websites have been added on the newly-created Parishes page. Those parishes in the Eastern Eparchy which do not currently have an online presence, have been listed together with their location on Google maps.
The Prokeimen and Alleluia Verses formatted for 5″x3″ index cards have been expanded to include corresponding verses from the General Menaion.
Please listen to отець Богдан Гладьо discuss the upcoming Eastern Eparchy of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada (UOCC) Cantoring Skills Workshops, beginning Saturday, September 7th, 2013. More information, including workshop schedule, location, course materials and recommended reading, will be posted very shortly.
Співайте Богові нашому, співайте, співайте Цареві нашому, співайте! Sing praises to our God, sing praises. Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
The Resurrectional Prokeimens and Alleluia Verses of the weekly cycle of 8 tones (in both Ukrainian and English) in a print-friendly 3″x5″ (index card) format have just been added to the Liturgical Texts page. The font used for the verses is large (14pt) for legibility, and the Ukrainian text includes stress marks as an aid to pronunciation.
